3 Ways Pronunciation Guides Can Benefit Students

by Felix Soto

Phonics is an age-old method of teaching children how to speak and read by sounding out letters and chunks of letters is still around. In fact, it has moved into other learning departments. When you pick up a child's guide to pronunciation book, you will clearly see many of the same things you learned about phonics when you were in school. Now, these same techniques are being used in all of the following ways and educational departments.

Enhances Speech Therapy

Perhaps the most important way and the most important department where word pronunciation is used is speech therapy. Dozens of children in each school district every year enter into speech therapy to learn how to read and pronounce letters and words better. Being able to see, hear, and read using these guides and tools improves a child's ability to do better in other subjects as well.

Extra Assistance for ESL Students

Students who do not consistently speak English as a first language or who do not know any English at all benefit immensely from phonics and pronunciation texts and materials. Many schools in the U.S. have students who only speak Spanish, Hmong, Chinese, or Russian (among other languages). It is exceedingly difficult for these students to learn with their peers because they cannot speak, read, or understand English. These students spend at least one hour each day in a classroom learning the English language.

Retrains the Brain

Children who have had brain injuries or brain surgeries must retrain their brains to see and read. Pronunciation is especially difficult for them because they can recognize letters and words, but have forgotten how to pronounce them. Before these children can be mainstreamed (i.e., re-enter classrooms with their peers), they spend countless hours retraining their brains to see, remember, pronounce, and speak what they read. Their classrooms are special needs rooms for children with more severe disabilities.

Purchasing Educational Books and Supplies for Teaching Phonics

To teach phonics, you will need textbooks and workbooks such as A Child’s Guide to Pronunciation. It helps to have flashcards, spelling lists, games, and exercises to help you teach your students how to sound out dipthongs, consonants, and resolve the dual sounds of vowels when they see vowels in use in different ways. Most school supply companies offer additional resources for teachers who want more than just textbooks for their classrooms. If you are not sure what would be most effective, ask the company who sold you the texts and workbooks.
