What Do Boys Like To Read? How To Solve This Question Easily

by Felix Soto

Many girls like to read books. Sometimes boys love to read too. Yet, how do you get boys equally interested in reading, and more importantly, how do you get them to love reading? It starts when parents read to small children often, but it is encouraged when you can find just the right books for whatever age your boy is. Here are some book categories that may encourage your son to read more, based on his current age.

Sensory Books for Infants and Toddlers

Books where he can touch, smell, or hear things on the pages really encourages babies and toddlers to want to pick up a book and look at it. He is not going to be able to read yet at this stage, but he will begin to notice pictures, textures, sound, and that there are printed things on the page (i.e., words). Being able to interact with a book in a way that creates a sensory stimulus for your child is the first step toward creating the necessary curiosity that all children need to adopt a love of reading.

Picture Books With Words and Stories for Preschoolers

At this stage, your child should be moving away from a lot of pictures and towards more words. They are beginning to read and understand that those black printed things on the page are letters, and that letters make words, and words make stories. Whatever your son is really interested in right now, follow that interest with books. If he wants to know more about trains, planes, and cars, get lots of books on those subjects. If he wants to read books with his favorite TV show or cartoon characters, get those books for him. Make it fun to go to the library to get books, where he can choose whatever he wants to read and check them out with a library card.

Adventure Books for Eight to Twelve-Year-Old Boys

Boys at this age are interested in all kinds of things, from comic books and graphic novels to adventure books. If your son develops an interest in adventure books, you certainly have a wide variety of classic authors and classic stories to choose from. Jack London's The Call of the Wild and Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea and The Time Machine are just a few to introduce to your son at this developmental stage of reading. Even if they have been made into graphic novels or abridged for easier reading, it is enough to get your son excited to read more.
