Give Books to Those on Your Christmas List

by Felix Soto

Have you ever heard that giving somebody a book is a kind of compliment? Whether or not that's true, giving books to those on your Christmas list will show them that you have a true interest in them. From buying a signed first edition of Pale Blue Dot to selecting books for others on your list, here are some ideas that might help you.

Select Pale Blue DotIf you have people on your list who are very interested in space and in the heavens, then a good book choice for those individuals would be a signed first edition copy of Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space. Some might say that this book is Carl Sagan's best one, the one that will become a classic, or that perhaps is already a classic. The fact that you went to the trouble to get a signed first edition will show the recipient that you truly went out of your way to make it a very special gift.

Because Pale Blue Dot is a rare book, it's probably not going to come cheap. Look for editions that are in relatively good shape. Some might have slight imperfections, like a water spot on one or more of the pages. However, that won't detract from the fact that you have bought a very impressive gift for the person who is the recipient.

Besides the book, consider giving posters and mugs that depict the front page of the Pale Blue Dot. That part of space depicted on the book cover by an actual blue moon is intriguing. The gifts will be a treasure that will someday be given to those in the next generation of space lovers.

Select More Books - Maybe you have a friend who loved the Bobbsey Twin books. Now that he or she has children, wouldn't it be fun to give Bobbsey Twin books to your friend or to his or her children?

Do you have a person on your list who is trying to collect children's classics? If so, look for books like Robinson Crusoe, Tom Sawyer, all of the Anne of Green Gables collection and Alice In Wonderland. Those classics will probably become family heirlooms someday.

Books like Gone with the Wind would be perfect for somebody who is interested in the Civil War years. And, though emotionally hard to read, Exodus, The Diary of Ann Frank and The Hiding Place would more than likely be very well received by people who are interested in the Holocaust experiences and the heroes who lived through them.

In other words, match a book to the interest of the person who will be receiving it.
