How To Write A Christian Fantasy Children's Book

by Felix Soto

Fantasy stories are timeless childhood favorites. They feed into so much of the wonder and excitement of being a kid while creating wonder and excitement of their one. But fantasy stories can also be a way to impart lessons that stay with a child and grow with them for life. Below are some tips for writing your own Christian fantasy children's book.

Read within the genre

Before trying to tackle a book of your own, you should get a sense of what else is out there. Reading through other Christian fantasy children's books will give you ideas for a book of your own. You'll see what you like, what you might want to avoid, and what's normal or popular for the genre. C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia and Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time are both staples in the Christian fantasy for children genre.

Keep a theme or lesson in mind

While you are brainstorming your book, find a theme or lesson you want to focus on. This is what makes a Christian fantasy book Christian and not just another fantasy book. This key idea does not have to be too involved. It can be God's love, a lesson not to lie, or even examples of how to do good. Adding in references to Biblical stories will help reinforce the themes and lessons you want to highlight.

Create an outline

When you have a good idea of what you want to write about, create an outline for your story. Outlining your book will help you organize your thoughts and your writing. The outline will also help you find the best places to include more overt references to a theme, lesson, or Bible story. Finally, a good outline will help keep you on track to finish your book in a timely manner.

Consider adding illustrations

For children's books, a picture is worth a million words. Whether your audience is 5 or 15, pictures can really bring your story to life. They help kids stay engaged while also making it easier to learn. Even just one picture in every chapter can add wonder and excitement to your book. You may even consider turning the story into a comic.

Remember to have fun

Writing any kind of book is a titanic undertaking that's sure to stress and tire you out. But it's also a massive achievement. No matter where you are on your book-writing journey, remember to have fun and find joy in writing. A book written with passion, faith, and love will always be better than any book without that extra spark.
